The church is closed Monday as we dig out from the recent snowstorm. We hope to open Tuesday. Stay warm and safe!

Plan Your First Visit

South Church is an open, inclusive, and welcoming church community. Whoever you are and wherever you are on life’s journey, you are welcome to attend and participate fully in our weekly worship services!

Where is South Church?

South Church Amherst is located at 1066 S. East Street in Amherst, MA.
We’re on the South Amherst common (also known as “Fiddler’s Green”), next to the Munson Library.

Is South Church Accessible?

  • Yes! There is an elevator just inside the (accessible) side entrance to take you up to the second floor sanctuary.
  • Accessible restrooms are located on both the first and second floors.
  • We are fully heated and air-conditioned.

What time is worship?

Worship starts at 10 a.m. every Sunday.

You may want to arrive 10 to 15 minutes early to find a parking space, take your kids to the nursery if you’d like, find a seat in the sanctuary, and enjoy the musical prelude which generally starts a few minutes before 10.

Where do I park?

We have a large lot with ample parking behind the church. In the unlikely event the lot fills, additional parking is available by the South Common.

How should I dress for worship?

There is no dress code at South Church Amherst. Wear whatever makes you comfortable. On any given Sunday, you’ll see people sporting styles ranging from suits to shorts.

Can I bring my family with me?

Yes! We offer free childcare for infants and toddlers in our nursery located on the second floor of our building. Changing stations are in every bathroom.

Children usually begin the service in the pews with their families. Early in the service, children are invited to come forward for a special children’s message. Parents are welcome to come forward with their children if that makes them more comfortable.

Children may then join Sunday School in the 2nd-floor classrooms. Parents are encouraged, if they would like, to take their children to Sunday School, and then return to worship once they are settled. Children are welcome to remain in the service if they are not ready to attend a group.

Families then reunite for delicious snacks at the fellowship hour! This is also a good time to speak with a member of the Family Ministries team to learn more about youth programs.

Where do I go when I arrive?

When you arrive, you will be greeted at the door and invited upstairs into our sanctuary, which can be reached by stairs or elevator. When you reach the sanctuary, an usher will offer you a Sunday bulletin, which has the order that we will follow for worship that day.

Find a seat anywhere you like and make yourself comfortable. You will also find a card in the back of the pew to fill out if you would like us to be in touch with you.

What are your worship services like?

Our worship services are traditional in style and include elements of music, scripture, and prayer. You can watch a past service or live stream on YouTube to get a sense of what to expect.

Am I expected to make a donation?

During the offering part of the service, ushers pass offering plates to give attendees an opportunity to support the church’s work. Giving is always optional, and visitors are never expected to donate. If you choose to contribute, any amount is appreciated, but no contribution is required.

Can I take communion?

South Church Amherst’s communion table is open to anyone who seeks to respond to Christ’s love. We welcome both adults and children to receive communion. We celebrate Holy Communion on the first Sunday of each month and during special services throughout the year.

What happens when the worship is over?

The pastor will be at the front door to shake hands as you exit. Both the pastor and our congregation would love to meet you after worship. Everyone is invited for refreshments during Fellowship Hour in the Kenseth room after the service.

I really liked my visit. What’s next?

We hope you will join us again, as well as:

Periodically throughout the year we offer an opportunity for new attendees to become official members of the church. Becoming a member means you are making a commitment to participate in our church community and to grow in your faith, and the church is making a commitment to support you and your spiritual growth.
