The Church Council meets monthly and is the administrative board of the church, acting for and on behalf of the congregation between congregational meetings. The Council has oversight all of the church ministries and is comprised of the Moderator, Vice Moderator, Clerk, a representative of each committee or board, and 3 members at large.
The Board of Trustees guides the business affairs of the church, including budgeting, personnel, and the physical plant. The operations that keep everything working come through the Trustees. These are the often-unseen tasks that include routine maintenance such as snow removal, cleaning, and repairs. In recent years, the trustees have overseen such projects as the energy retrofit and solar installation, the kitchen renovation, and installation of the heating and cooling system. Other projects and purchases initiated by the congregation are overseen by the trustees, such as the T-Coil hearing aid system. The trustees work closely with the treasurer and pastor to track the budget and manage staff matters. Planning for upcoming budgets, scheduling facility work, and handling emergencies are continual responsibilities for the trustees.
The office of deacon dates back to the earliest days of the Christian Church. The word deacon comes from the Greek word diakonos, which means “servant.” At South Congregational Church the deacons work closely with the Pastor, assisting her in the Pastoral Ministry of the church, particularly in the areas of Pastoral Care, Worship, and Membership. The deacons are the spiritual rudder of the church, helping to keep the congregation focused on its purpose and mission as the Body of Christ.
The Family Ministries Committee gathers to oversee the church’s ministries pertaining to educating, particularly with children and youth. The committee also organizes opportunities for intergenerational learning.
The Board of Christian Outreach is responsible for identifying, coordinating and facilitating missions to serve others as well as social action for redressing injustices in our local communities, state, nation and world. Once identified, these opportunities are enacted through the generosity of all members of the South Church community. These community contributions come in the form of physical labor, monetary gifts and contributions of essential items to sustain the less fortunate among us. (e.g. food, clothing, personal hygiene).
